July 6th: rifles, getting lost and vacuum packed tuna

Hi everyone, thanks for all your comments, keep them coming!
Below is the web address for our podcast yesterday. You can also check iceedge.wordpress.com and iceedge.com for more photos etc.
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-7935637699421939047&hl=en-GB
This morning we went to UNIS (University of Norway in Svalbard) for a safety training lecture by a world expert, which made us aware of dangerous situations on the ice. Then we went to a rifle range to learn how to deal with a polar bear encounter, and more importantly how to avoid one.

After lunch at the institute, we went (without the teachers who were practicing their rifle shooting) to the harbour, and went round and round in an attempt to find the right people. It ended up being a rather repetetive tour of the same stretch of harbour. Eventually we got our special orange suits on, which made us feel like we were vacumed packed, and we went in the arctic sea!!! It felt wounderful being in the freezing water, but actuallhy not being cold, and having the snow covered mountains behind us.

Now we are in a mad rush to finish this quickly so we can promptly leave for our bbc radio interview at the bbc lady's hotel.. then we're off to a posh 3 course dinner which should be lovely!!!!

melinda (me) had some VERY worrying problems with her beloved fisheye but all was solved very quickly so she is euphoric =D

BBC breakfast tv on saturday (morning, i assume) will have soething to do with our trip if you're interested..
also bbc told us that a video conference hosted by our school might be a possibility so we'll keep you posted!!

lots of love from us all!!!!

Again, the photos are really nice!
I was wondering what you were doing in freezing water! Sounds cool, I wish I could do it too! You look lovely in the blog!
I'm getting more jealous every time I check this blog and see all the things you've done! But I'm really happy for you that you get to experience it! :D
NOOO what happened to the mighty fisheye camera? Glad it was resolved... will watch out for you on tv in the morning, give me details of the channel (also for the radio interview!)
I'm glad you enjoy the trip so far!
So, only the teachers dealt with firearms huh?

Lovely photos - is that a sledge dog or just a guesthouse dog? Going in the sea sounds great, even to a land person like me. Enjoy the meal -I am imagining lots of fish but hopefully not only that

Trying to download the video...slooow- and will check the radio and get up early for the tv!

WOW!! looks amazing !!
liking the "yep, yep, yep" on your video. not entirely sure what's happening with the vacuum packed tuna but hey!!
ummmm not much has happened her science coursework is RUBBISH and the teachers do NOTHING to help at all so we're all going to fail. except perhaps you guys who might more help when you get back (lol you seem to be getting the best of both worlds right now)
slight dilemma with dofe but all will be explained when you get back (basically tents have changed). our routes are a bit scary (ie the first thing we do is go down a massive valley across a river and then up the other side!! ARGHHGHG o and apparently now we could also die from a broken shoelace (well, not quite) and bikers may come and attack us with axes!! lol (the dude told us loads of funny stories about whats happened on dofe in the past but i somehow find unlikely to happen to us as long as we're concentrating.
Ruby i got ur e-mail you're gonna love the things when you look at them i laughed so much!
Melinda hope your camera is aright we all want to know what happened so SPEAK now!! (or forever hold your peace (sorry that would really annoy me if i didn't put it in))
oo and most of us should be getting full privalages unless we've been told otherwise!!

Hi guys - you really are doing some amazing things. I love the team kit too!I'm trying to co-ordinate the video link-up so I hope to speak to you soon. Let me know who you'd like to speak to and I'll try to fix it to get them out of a lesson or two :).

Best wishes

Hi from NY - thanx Corinne for the link to the beeb. We are following you all and love the photos - the reindeer was rather lovely. I can't imagine being in such arctic temps but those suits sound really cool. The temps here are set for the 90s tomorrow so your photos are helping keep us cool. Lily wants to know what flavors your gum comes in????

Dear all,

The ability to follow your adventures so closely and in such a lively form is making me into a 'blogger' - something I thought would never happen! I particularly liked the image of the four of your emerging out of the sea – like some weird new species of mermaids!
I imagine you may be on the ship now , I gather from the BBC breakfast show –( yes, I did catch it, but not the early one so I did not see the images of you that others talked about, hope there will be ways of catching up with it all later!) that it is a Russian boat so may be they have curtains! Megan’s somewhat caustic remarks on the flimsiness of the curtains were presented in an oh so typical manner – lovely to be able to catch bits and glimpses like that. Megan’s dad sends his greetings – from Cape Verde (15 degree N), where he was able to access your blog but not to send any comments, – he is very impressed and sends his love. Looking forward to the next update – love to all. Marie Louise and Kim Michael

Hello girls, and thanks for keeping the parent crew back home updated with news and pictures! It's good to know you are discovering and experiencing so much every day. As for us, I think we are all experiencing an unusual mixed feeling called happienvyness when we think of you.
And, yes, the picture of the Arctic Sea dip is impressive. And so are all other pictures really - so much so that one of them now proudly features on the family PC's background.
It's good also to see that there has been no blog update for some time now: it means that there is more interesting stuff to do offline. I am firmly convinced that real life is so much more interesting than typing at a keyboard.
At the same time, as I know phone calls are a no no from the boat, and as there is really no time for emails, the blog is a very reassuring way to keep a particular breed of prone-to-worrying dads informed that you are all safe and doing well... So after all, it wouldn't be bad either to find a blog update on Monday morning. :o)
Take care and happy exploring!
Marco (Melinda's dad)

psch. (yes I DO mean psch) you guys sound so fake and middle-class at the start of the vid, when you did the prepared bit but that all went out the window when you got megan onto curtains it seems... hope you guys catch some sleep, do any of you have mobiles? can I call you? as I gathered that it's difficult the other way. sorry the comment was so long.

Dear all,

We have the same experience as Naomi - so are checking back and forth between iceedge, BBC and your blog.
The swimming takes a bit more explaining! Who ever came up with that idea?

It all looks so beautuful, and you seem to be meeting people who are involved with the artic in so many ways; it must be really involving. Love, Marie Louise (mor)
